Mixed Media Paintings by Vatsala Soni Ranjan
Reception: Mon, Feb 6, 6pm
The collection Spirit Animals is inspired by the environmental wisdom and spirituality of Native Americans. Spirit Animals celebrates the life and spirit of the hunted animal. There is a play on the relationship of the animal with the surrounding environment. The nomadic nature and the deep connection with nature are something we also possess as humans. Our roots stem from the earth but through our nomadic nature, we also grow our roots grounding ourselves to our surroundings. Wood stains show the rhythmic graining and knotting in the wood panels paralleling life. We are nomadic, travelers through life. The tar grounds the solid elements and the acrylic paint provides depth. Each element comes together to mimic the journey of life and life itself.
Art and design are an extension of me as an individual. I have had the unique experience of living, studying, and experiencing art and design in three different countries. This global and cultural exposure has increased my thirst for exploration and knowledge of different communities, their artistic representation of the natural world, and the subsequent relationships formed by people. I love working with different mediums such as watercolors, color pencils, charcoal sticks, acrylic, and also some unexpected ones such as tar and wood stain. Some of my biggest influences are tribal art. Art is a hobby that keeps me connected to the world around me and grounds my soul to my roots.
